THINK

“A day without laughter is a day wasted.”

Charlie Chaplin

Admittedly, I’m a little late to the party, but Lou and I have recently started watching “Welcome to Wrexham”.

Have you watched it?

It’s a docuseries that follows movie star Ryan Reynolds and comedic actor Rob McElhenney, who bought one of the oldest football clubs in the world – Wrexham AFC.

You don’t have to be into football or Ryan Reynolds to appreciate it. It’s about real people and a classic underdog story we can all get behind.

Neither Ryan and Rob have have any experience in football, running a club, working together or Wales. The stakes are quickly raised when the boys realise the entire town is inextricably linked to the fate of the team, and the community are counting on the two actors to transform their team and town.

Ryan and Rob are good people. Although this is clearly a side project, they take their responsibility very seriously and genuinely want to improve the club and community.

After watching a few episodes (I’m still on season one), I found a common theme that I was immediately drawn to…

  • It’s something that will make you more money, healthier, more likeable, and attractive.
  • It’s something YOU can use in your job, side hustle, with loved ones, or even in everyday life.
  • It’s something I try to use every week in my Newsletter.
  • It’s something most people are blind to.
  • BUT have the ability to change immediately…

Did you spot it?

Before I share what it is and how you can use it, I want to tell you a little story I haven’t shared with anyone.

“I don’t like who I am.”

It was January 6-7 years ago, and Lou and I were on a walk.

We started talking about New Year’s Resolutions.

I went through a list of things I wanted to work on, which were roughly the same as the previous handful of years:

  • Making more money
  • Investing more money
  • Getting fitter and healthier
  • Creating more memories
  • Blah, blah, blah…

As we walked and talked, I explored various ideas of how I could make these improvements. It was all very Huw-like…

Rational, analytical, reasonable, and dull.

A thought popped into my head.

Should I tell Lou?

If I spoke it out loud, I’d be admitting it.

But if I kept quiet, I could ignore it and deny its existence.

SCREW IT! I’ll tell her.

“Lou, I don’t like who I am.“

She reacted with surprise, “What do you mean?“

I expanded, “I don’t like how serious I am about everything. I’ve become boring and I hate it.“

Lou was still confused, “Have you? I haven’t noticed.“

I might have exaggerated how ‘boring’ I was in my head, but all I know is… I felt it.

Like you, I have many aspects to my personality ranging from driven and disciplined, rational and reasonable, mindful and measured, to cheeky and cheerful.

Only the cheerful was more cheerless lately.

I hadn’t long moved to Cambridge, I hadn’t made any local friends yet, and I worked in my home office alone all day. The lack of socialising was getting to me.

I said, “I know it’s a weird goal to have, but I want to have more fun and be more silly. I don’t like who I am without it.“

I enjoyed being around my ‘fun friends’, and whenever I leaned into silliness, life was more enjoyable.

So, I committed to becoming more loosey-goosey in the only way I knew how…

By studying it. 🤦🤣

I’ll share the major takeaway I encountered in a moment, but for now, let’s return to Wrexham to see what that mystical money-making THING was.

Welcome To Wrexham

There are many aspects that make “Welcome to Wrexham” compelling:

  • Hollywood coming to Wales
  • The people from the community
  • Great storytelling and editing
  • The unpredictability of football
  • A classic underdog story

But I’m going to focus on something else.

To call this THING a mystical money-maker is unfair….

It’s far more than that.

It draws people to you, makes you more attractive, it’s healthy, and makes life more enjoyable.

“OMG Huw, if you don’t tell me what this frigging thing is, I’m going to explode!“

The thing is Levity.

Ryan and Rob treat the serious and delicate manner of business ownership, fan welfare and community building with many things, but the thing that shines through is light-heartedness.

They deliver the goods and have fun on the way.

They poke at each other and their lack of football (and Wales) knowledge.

“Welcome to Wrexham” is a marketing masterclass.

They unapologetically leverage their massive networks to promote the club.

The TikTok and Reels are outstanding! 👏

The Ifor Williams advert is brilliant! 🤣

They’ve raised the profile of the club, the town and supporters (featured in the series).

It makes these highly successful, wealthy actors… likeable.

And we’re all rooting for Wrexham.

So, what can we learn from this series and apply in our own lives?

Hello From Huwsview

When I started creating content on finance, I was adamant that I wanted to make it fun.

Finance can be stuffy, and I don’t think it needs to be.

Like “Welcome to Wrexham” has proven, you can simultaneously educate, engage AND entertain.

My mission is to help you become financially free… and make finance fun.

  • There are people online who know more about finance than me.
  • There are people who are way more entertaining than me.
  • But I’d like to think that as a ‘Financial Entertainer’, I’m right up there.

By inserting levity into my content, I can ultimately help more people spend less, earn more and invest wisely.

I wouldn’t say people like the inclusion of light-hearted fun.

They CRAVE it.

And you can give it to them.

Welcome to Whoopee

“We never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public.”

Bryan White

Humans are social creatures and we want to fit in. So, we carry out certain social protocols at gatherings or events.

  • “Hi, how are you?”
  • “Where are you from?”
  • “What do you do for a living?”

The answers we provide are equally dull:

  • “I’m great thanks, how are you?”
  • “I’m from Herefordshire. Have you been there?”
  • “I run a publishing and media business. I also invest in property and stocks. What do you do?”

Social protocols exist at work, at home, in the streets, in shops and online.

We all do it unknowingly to a degree.

But there’s something you can do to draw people to you.

It will help you make more money, become healthier, more likeable and attractive…

And you can implement it immediately.

Stop giving ‘predictable answers’.

People crave fun energy and are attracted to people who break the mould.

You don’t have to be something you’re not or a stand-up comedian at a funeral.

Shoot for one step more fun than others around you.

Example:

“What do you do for a living Huw?”

  • Predictable response:
    • “I run a publishing and media business. I also invest in property and stocks. What do you do?“

🥱 Zzzzz

  • Fun response:
    • “I sell books that other people write for me on Amazon, I invest in property with my friend who does all the work, and I run a flailing YouTube business, which tries to make Finance Fun. Have you subscribed?“

I’m not going to be nominated for a National Comedy Award whilst you mop your eyes from all the LOLing… but that’s not the point.

Authentically break the mould with unpredictable answers and see how differently people respond to you.

You’ll alienate 10-20% of people, but they tend to be Moaning Myrtle’s, so I wouldn’t lose any sleep over that.

80-90% of people will be drawn to you.

Break the Mould

In 2022, I won Property Entrepreneur of the Year out of 60 candidates.

In 2023, I came 2nd in Property Entrepreneur of the Year (Advanced) out of 150 candidates.

Hands down, 90% of that came down to how I presented. Not what I presented.

80-90% of people presented in a typical PowerPoint fashion.

I used Photoshop images of my head superimposed onto other people’s bodies. I poked fun at myself, my business partner and the trainers.

I broke the mould.

I used the image above to introduce myself to the cohort. It got a positive response.

I could have used a standard picture of myself on my own, but I decided to break the mould.

We all know, like and respect the trainers. So, the deletion of their faces was unexpected by the audience, and they responded well to it.

I’m not suggesting you go out and hammer people around you. I make fun of myself more than anyone, but in the right doses, with the right people, it can stand you apart.

Awesome Adverts

We’ve all seen cringable, toe-curling adverts that make you resent the last 30 seconds of living.

Most adverbs fall in the “Meh” category. Having little to no impact on us.

Then there are those rare beasts that jump out of the screen, slap you across the face and leave a lasting impact on you.

Do you remember these?

  • Snickers – “You’re not you when you’re hungry.”
  • Dollar Shave Club – “Our blades are f*cking great.”
  • Old Spice – “The man your man could smell like.”
  • John West Salmon – “Bear fight.”
  • Budweiser – “Wassup.”

The first time I watched the Budweiser advert:

“What the f*ck was that all about?!”

The next phone call I had with a friend:

“Wassssuuuuupppppp!”

You might not be aware of all of them, but the ones you know… you know!

Light-hearted humour works exceptionally well in business and marketing.

  • Attention-grabbing – Funny content stands out and is more likely to be remembered.
  • Emotional connection – Humour evokes positive emotions and create a memorable experience for viewers. When people associate positive emotions with a brand/business, they are more likely to remember it and feel positively inclined toward it.
  • Viral potential – Funny content are more likely to be shared on social media platforms. People enjoy sharing content that makes them laugh with their friends and followers, thereby extending the reach of its initial audience.
  • Relatable – Humour can help to humanise a brand/business and make it more relatable to consumers. When done well, funny ads can create a strong association between the brand and positive feelings, leading to increased brand loyalty and preference.
  • Break through resistance – We’re bombarded with people and businesses trying to get our attention. Light-hearted content can break through the resistance and make people more receptive to the message being delivered.

Humour can be a powerful tool for engaging people, building awareness, and ultimately driving business.

But it’s not limited to making money…

A bit of light-hearted levity can create stronger relationships, make others happy, reduce stress for you and those around you and make you feel great.

So, the next time you create content, deliver a presentation or connect with someone you know or a stranger, try breaking the mould and inserting a bit of light-hearted fun and see how people respond to you.

Huw won’t be disappointed.

Reflect and share this with someone.

ASK

“Do you take yourself too seriously?”

“How could you sprinkle a little bit of fun into your life?”

Write down what comes to mind.
